Back from the Beach

Not really. I'm back from the Indiana Arborist Association's Annual Conference, though, which is nearly as good. I'll try to pass on as much information as I can recall from the event.

Here is a great tool from Dr. Cliff Sadoff and the Entomology folks at Purdue University. It is a cost calulator to help you prepare for the Emerald Ash Borer. It will help you decide if you should treat your ash trees with insecticides, remove your ash trees, or remove ash trees and replace them with resistant trees. You can use this calculator to compare the annual and cumulative costs over a 25 year period for any management strategy that includes a mixture of tree removal, replacement, and insecticide treatment. This calculator is useful whether you are a homeowner, government official, or a commercial applicator responsible for treating a large stand of Ash trees.

Who needs to be prepared for EAB? The insect has been spotted in Michigan, Illinois, Indiana, Maryland, Missouri, Ohio, Ontario, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, and Wisconsin. If you live in one of these areas or even a neighboring state you should begin educating yourself about the exotic pest.

Thanks to EB for sending in this great video which is guaranteed to give you nightmares.
